Malesela on his knees! Dance wants Mngqithi’s initial role at Mamelodi Sundowns

The veteran tactician argues he has never had an opportunity to coach a well-financed team in Mzansi.

Coach Dan Malesela, commonly referred to as Dance, sees no point in Mamelodi Sundowns bringing Romain Folz as the assistant coach.

The former AmaZulu coach will be serving under the instructions of Manqoba Mngqithi and most probably Steve Komphela who have been tasked with helping the club deliver following the exit of Rulani Mokwena.

Malesela is currently a free agent after his unceremonious exit from Baroka FC who he had helped to Premier Soccer League promotion/relegation play-offs.

Sundowns is a place I would go to

The 34-year-old custodian did not deliver as anticipated in his stints at Marumo Gallants and Usuthu, and ‘Dance' is wondering why the Brazilians have not considered a local for the assistant coach role.

Mngqithi was serving in that role under Mokwena, but he is expected to be the main man in the 2024/25 season.

“It would sound as if I wanted the [Sundowns] job for myself when that's not really the case but Sundowns is a place I would go to,” the 59-year-old told the media.

“With Folz's appointment, I was just raising my concerns because in South Africa assistant coaches don't have the final say, so why bring in a foreigner who won't have the final say? That is all I was worried about; the succession rate of coaches we must have in the country. It looks like we are not worried about our own local coaches,” Malesela continued.

‘I haven't had the luxury of coaching a big team'

The tactician is highly rated and loved for his effort to ensure his teams play a beautiful game. However, he has stated he has never had the privilege of coaching a team with enough resources to help him deliver.

“It's not like I haven't coached good clubs but I haven't coached clubs with resources, I haven't had that luxury,” the veteran coach added.

“I haven't had an opportunity where I am able to point to a player and say, ‘I want that player', and I get him. It has always been scraping here and there.”

In 2018, Malesela helped TS Galaxy defeat Kaizer Chiefs to win the Nedbank Cup. He has initially coached Chippa United, and Marumo Gallants among other teams.
