Mamelodi Sundowns backed to crush Stade Malien in Mali

Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse and football pundit Mlungisi Ngubane are confident the club will comfortably advance against Stade Malien, citing the resolution of recent “internal issues” as a key factor.

Sundowns are in Bamako, Mali for the second leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final on Sunday holding a commanding 3-0 aggregate lead over their opponents.

Despite their strong position, head coach Miguel Cardoso has recently come under fire for a series of unconvincing performances from the team.

However, both Ngubane and Arendse have observed a renewed sense of hunger and determination within the squad in recent weeks.

“Sundowns will secure another victory. They have addressed their previous problems,” Ngubane told KickOff.

“It appears the club’s president has held discussions with the players, indicating that changes have taken place behind the scenes,” he added. “It is now evident that the players are motivated and united, as reflected in their performance. Even their coach appears more relaxed.”

Arendse shared a similar view ahead of the crucial away fixture.

“The Sundowns players seem highly motivated now; they are winning both their Champions League and domestic league matches,” the former centre-back noted.

“They may be playing for various reasons, such as pride, their coach, the fans, their families, or even a chance to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup. Their next challenge, which is the away leg of their quarter-final against Stade Malien, requires them to accelerate their efforts and increase their intensity.”

Sundowns had been criticised early and in mid-season for some unconvincing performances with coach Cardoso coming under increased pressure from fans some of who were calling for his sacking.

However, since February, they have lost just one game out of 10, winning eight and drawing one to leave them in a strong position to defend their league title while they have one foot in the CAF Champions League semi-final.
