Mamelodi Sundowns come from behind to beat RB Leipzig witg Leon scoring a brace

Mamelodi Sundowns beat German outfit RB Leipzig 3-1 in an entertaining international friendly fixture staged at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.

As expected, Masandawana fielded a weakened, but still strong team, as most of their stars had joined Bafana Bafana for the 2026 World Cup, while others started from the bench following recent CAF Champions League triumph.

It was the same case with the Bundesliga outfit, which had lost some of their key players to their respective countries for the global competition, with the technical team also giving others an opportunity to shine.

The Konate show

Leipzig started the game a brighter side, building from the back all the way to the final third.

French attacker Samba Konate caused all types of problems on the left wing, unleashing dangerous shots only that they were off target. It took Masandawana time to settle as the Red Bulls dominated proceedings.

There was no surprise when the vistors took a deserved lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a rocket from Konate.

On the other end, Marcelo Allende and Peter Shalulile had half-chances to find the back of the net, but they were stopped before causing trouble.

Leon shows what he is made of

Masandawana came back strongly after the break and could have easily leveled matters in the 48th minute, but Bennet Mokoena’s effort was saved by Peter Gulacsi in RB Leipzig goal.

Tashreeq Matthews came closest in the 50th minute when his effort from the right hit the post before Mokoena fired over the bar with the goal at his mercy. The former could have done better 10 minutes later when he was picked by the goalkeeper with a well-taken free-kick, but his tame effort was easily saved.

The Premier Soccer League heavyweights finally got their goal with 15 minutes to go when Leipzig defenders were caught napping and Matthews teed-up Brayan Leon for a cool finish.

The Brazilians made up for their missed chances in the stoppages as Leon completed his brace.

Mokoena then ensured it ended 3-1 with a cool finish two minutes later.

The players will now be given a couple of weeks off to rest before resuming for pre-season ahead of the 2026/27 season.
