Mamelodi Sundowns get one hand on PSL title after big win over Stellies

Mamelodi Sundowns could win the PSL title as early as Tuesday after putting up a commanding display against Stellenbosch FC to win 3-0 on Sunday.

Sundowns knew victory would all but secure an eighth straight PSL crown and did just that as they went ahead after six minutes through Lucas Ribeiro’s indirect freekick.

The Brazilian rifled home after Sihle Nduli’s back pass to end his 11-game goal drought and open the floodgates for the PSL champions-elect.

Ribeiro then turned provider six minutes later when he laid it on for Iqraam Rayners to score his third goal in as many matches for 2-0 in favour of the hosts at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

What do Sundowns need to be crowned?

Sundowns completed the job inside 18 minutes as Arthur Sales scored the third via a deflection from Thabo Moloisane with the Brazilians then taking their foot off the pedal for the rest of the match.

Victory sees Sundowns take their tally to 67 points from 26 matches, 15 ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have three games in hand.

Miguel Cardoso’s team now need just one point from their remaining two matches to be crowned for an eighth straight year but they could win it on Tuesday if Pirates fail to beat Golden Arrows.

Sundowns have been on a roll in the league since losing to Pirates just before the international window in March, winning four straight matches, without conceding a goal, to edge ever closer to the title.
