Sundowns latest news as they break

Kwanelo frustrated by Gallants failure to take chances

Marumo Gallants coach Ronnie Kananelo was left frustrated by his side’s inability to convert chances in their 1-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup last 16.

Cardoso adamant he trusts Saleng

Miguel Cardoso’s feels his decision to bring on Monnapule Saleng when he could have brought in a more defensive minded player to close shop against Marumo Gallants shows the trust he has in the player.

Saleng made his first appearance of the season when he came on as a substitute in the final 10 minutes for Antonio van Wyk, as Sundowns registered a 1-0 victory over Gallants to progress to the quarterfinals of the Carling Knockout Cup.

The winger recently made his way back into the Sundowns first team training sessions after being exiled early in the season for transgressions revealed by Cardoso, including not showing up to travel for last season’s CAF Champions Legue second leg.

“We don’t allow ourselves to exclude a person, a human being out of the process. Obviously, we need to understand how to relate with everything that happens, but we don’t exclude no one and I think that’s the opportunity we gave to Saleng, for him to go over his faults and understand himself and show consistency and train systematically in a good level and be aware of the things that were important to change,” Cardoso Stated.

“He made his effort and he will have his chances according to performances. That will be evaluated like all the other players. If he becomes consistent, he will have more chances. If he has more situations, he will have less chances.

“I think today, we wanted to show him that we trust him and give him the energy to enter on the match. Maybe in the moment it would have been easy for moment to put in one player to close the game. I still had the will to say ‘go there’. It’s a proof of trust and a little bit of energy also to feel that we are here for him when he needs,” he added.

Why sub Cele and Basadien during halftime?
