Sundowns keeper questions unfair criticism

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ricardo Goss questioned the unfair criticism directed at Hugo Broos, after they lost their opening game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup against co-hosts Mexico.

Criticism of Broos’ tactics has been raging since the 2-0 loss to Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City last Thursday. Some of the disparaging words used against the Belgian mentor have also been unfortunate. Goss looks at what he phrases as unfair criticism of Broos.

“It’s just unfortunate that we aren’t realistic enough as South Africa. I’m not saying we shouldn’t go try and win games but I think it’s unfair on the coach. If you look at his hips stay with the national team I think that has been phenomenal, and its something we haven’t had for a while,” he said as quoted by SABC Sport.

“We know that he will come at us, but we know that after the session, he’ll go back to being our father and make jokes with us. We still love him, and we’re going to play for him,” the on-loan Siwelele goalkeeper added.

Sundowns & Co. admired!

Brazilian TV Sports reporter Leonardo Haidar has shared his admiration of football in South Africa and has explained why he follows the ‘big three’ teams, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, he also picks some of his favourite Bafana Bafana stars.

The fear Zwane brought at Sundowns

Agent Jazzman Mahlakgane has revealed the fear that Themba Zwane gave to established players at Mamelodi Sundowns, in his first training sessions, before even playing official matches at the club.

Zwane was signed by Sundowns in January 2011 at the same period with Teko Modise, who arrived as a marquee acquisition from Orlando Pirates.

“The interesting thing is when Themba started training with the club, it was probably a week later and Teko came to me and said, ‘This boy you brought (to Sundowns) will make me retire’ because I think he was already sharing a position with him and Surprise (Moriri), at the time Teko was going to take over from Surprise,” Mahlakgane told Radio 2000’s Game On.

“‘Mshishi’ Teko saw him as a guy to be the next big thing. He prophesied it that time, not at the time ‘Mshishi’ was playing, he was not even playing, he was just training with them and of course ‘Mshishi’ went to Black Aces, where he was working with the late Clive Barker and at that time everybody started knowing that ‘I think he’s going to be something big’.

“And of course fast-forward to now, my communication with the club or with the Chairman of the club, I’ve always said: ‘It would be an injustice, a player like Themba, who can do the job on the pitch, living a clean life and a great ambassador of the club, he has not put his feet wrong, I think it’s only fair that you make him your (Luka) Modric, because he’s a guy who can play as long as his body can carry his feet,” Mahlakgane stated.
