Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has urged the club to dip back into the transfer market, revealing that the squad still needs strengthening in several key areas, according to iDiski Times.

Speaking after the Brazilians’ 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, Cardoso acknowledged that while his attacking options have improved this season — notably through the return of Cassius Mailula and the emergence of youngster Bennet Mokoena — there is work to be done elsewhere in the squad.

The Portuguese coach admitted that he had voiced concerns about the lack of depth in attack last term but feels the situation has improved heading into 2026/27.

“Last year I complained a lot about having more options for the front. This year we are better, and that allows the coach to be better also,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV after the match.

“I still think that here and there, in the middle, in the back, we need something more. Let’s hope it’s something the club is working on, because the season is very tough,” he said.

“I think, yeah, centre-back, midfielder, maybe something there on the right. Let’s see what is possible to do. But good signs regarding development.”

Cardoso hails ‘wonderful’ Masandawana star

Meanwhile, Cardoso reserved special praise for striker Cassius Mailula after he came off the bench to rescue a point for Sundowns against Chiefs at FNB Stadium, as reported by KickOff.

Mailula, who returned to Chloorkop ahead of the 2026/27 season after three years with Toronto FC in North America, entered the fray with 15 minutes remaining and scored with his first touch, heading home to cancel out Langelihle Phili’s earlier strike for Chiefs.

It was Mailula’s second goal in three appearances since his return, having also netted the extra-time winner in the MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City a week earlier.

Cardoso was full of admiration for the 25-year-old, highlighting his character as much as his quality.

“He’s a wonderful boy, first of all, that loves the club, loves the group, loves the ambiance. He is a happy guy; you give him five minutes, he goes happy, and that usually brings good things back,” Cardoso told SuperSport TV.

The coach also reflected on the broader contest, praising the quality of the match despite his side having to settle for a draw.
