Cardoso on Mailula: I said he is ours!
Two goals in three games off the bench! Fresh from his spell abroad, Cassius Mailula is making an immediate impact at Chloorkop.
Miguel Cardoso admits he was desperate for more firepower upfront and explains why Mailula was the exact solution he was searching for.
“It is important to say that last year, a lot of time, obviously not publicly, because it is not my intention to speak publicly, but it’s clear that I was appealing and asking for more options in front so that we can have more variety of players,” Cardoso told the media.
“We struggled last year, or since I arrived at the club, to have the capacity to change players in front and to put energy and reinforcement. There were a few numbers that compared to this season.

“I think this season we are a little bit better or better. Obviously, here and there, some of the youngsters still show some lack of capacity to decide in the best way because they want to make an extra dribble, or they want to take an extra shot at the goal too early.
“But we are also giving them opportunities to grow with the competition. Obviously, sometimes, the price is not getting the results that you want, but I think we have been doing well.”
Players’ attitude lauded
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso praised the character and attitude of his team after the African champions fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
“I’m critical about things that can be better, that can develop when matches don’t go into the directions they should go but today it’s time to praise, I think we had a beautiful football match,” Cardoso stated.

“It was a lot of tactical commitment, here and there, a bit stuck, especially in the first half, what is clear, regarding the importance of a result in the moment of this season, two teams that want to collect points, to move forward and place themselves as best as possible on the table.”
Sundowns had prepared for the possibility of Chiefs using a different formation, with Cardoso revealing that they had not expected to face the five-man defensive system employed by Fernando da Cruz.

“I think that we as Sundowns, we were loyal to our intention, how we prepared the match, we didn’t come to face a five-man defensive line, regarding the way that Kaizer Chiefs have been playing recently in the previous matches,” he explained.
