Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso fears Teboho Mokoena might have suffered a severe injury during their CAF Champions League match in Angola on Sunday.

Mokoena suffered an injury in the first half of the match against Wiliete SC, which ended goalless, after a nasty collision and had to be taken off to be replaced with Bathusi Aubaas, leaving Cardoso sweating over his availability ahead of the second leg on Friday.

“It is a little bit of a touch on the ligament that was hurt during his time with the national team,” Cardoso said after the match.

“At the moment we don’t have the extent of the injury, but he could not continue in the match. So let’s hope it is not a big thing and we can recover him for the next match. Tomorrow [Monday] he will be subjected to exams.”

Mokoena’s setback adds to a growing injury list as before the match, the Sundowns team doctor had confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and left-back Aubrey Modiba are also injured.

“We have Ronwen Williams out, Aubrey Modiba also out, but these are not serious injuries. We expect them really soon,” said Dr Carl.

“Khuliso is still out, Grant Kekana is still out, and Keanu Cupido is still out. The rest of the players should be fine.”

Fist fight in Angola after Champions League clash

Meanwhile, the Sundowns’ Champions League match ended on a sour note as a fist fight ensued between members of the two benches, leaving one hospitalised.

According to Daily Sport, a confrontation ensued between members of the two benches following the goalless draw and a member from the Sundowns technical team allegedly assaulted Wiliete head coach Beto Bianchi.

The coach was taken to hospital and failed to turn up for media duties, leaving his assistant to take over the responsibilities.

It is still not certain which members of the technical team were involved in the altercation as a clip posted online shows there was a confrontation involving a number of people as the two teams were heading into the dressing room after the match.
