The star will always be there! Cardoso on losing PSL

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has reflected on the season that has been, as he agonizes over losing out on domestic cup competitions, after winning the CAF Champions League.

After Masandawana were crowned champions of Africa for the second time in their history in a space of ten years, Cardoso felt they could have done better in other domestic competitions but winning the CAF Champions League carries more weight.

“I think we could’ve done more in terms of results, when you look back at the season, we have to understand we had difficult moments but I would like remind everybody that we lost two competitions on penalties, the first two cups we lost was on penalties and when we lose on penalties,” Cardoso told The Pitchside Podcast.

“Our championship, I don’t want to go deeper, because we know what happened throughout the season, how we were aggressed, played seven matches in 21 days, throughout those matches we lost players who could’ve kept us in the championship.

“But it’s also important to look at the bright side of the moon, it’s one championship we broke record after record last season, the records of the league are almost (all) in our hands, we have our names there. We have to be grateful of what God has given us and to finish with this thing that everybody pursued for ten years, is the sensation that we did something important. I don’t know if it was (Khuliso) Mudau who said, ‘As much as the championship can be won, there’s nothing that takes the star out of your shirt’. The logos can change but the star will always be there,” Cardoso concluded.

Sundowns to lose Cardoso?

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso’s name is under discussion at various clubs in north Africa all the way to the Gulf Region while he has already stated his position about coaching in Portugal again.

Cardoso lifted the CAF Champions League a week ago 17 months after his arrival at Sundowns. As is normal, that success has stretched the attention around his name into the conversations of moneybags in north Africa along with those in the Gulf Region.

“While Al Ahly have listed his name there is another club in Libya willing to put a crazy offer which will nearly double his package at Sundowns. Unfortunately, the Libyan option will not be considered regardless of the financial attraction,” KickOff reported.

“He has also responded to questions about working in Portugal again to which he has stated it will have to ‘an extraordinary project’ for him to come back. Cardoso said this in an interview with a Portuguese publication named Lusa over the weekend.

“So that means his focus will be on Sundowns where the financial terms of his employment will be revised. This has been the longest job that Cardoso has held as a head coach of a senior team,” they concluded.
