Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has commented on his future at the club, making it clear that he hopes to stay and finish his career at Chloorkop.

Zwane is the longest serving Sundowns player, having been at the club since 2011, and has just added his second CAF Champions League title to his glittering trophy cabinet. He hopes that he will have many such moments.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” Zwane said when asked about his future as quoted by FARPost. “I don’t want to lie, I don’t know, but for now I’m just enjoying this moment [Champions League triumph] with the guys, and we will see as time goes by. But obviously my wish is to stay here and finish my career at Mamelodi Sundowns.”

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has spoken of how his team used the heartbreak of losing last season’s CAF Champions League final as motivation to win it this year.

The Brazilians lost to Egyptian side Pyramids in the final last year but were on the winning side this time, beating AS FAR of Morocco 2-1 on aggregate, to end their 10-year wait for a second continental title.

“You remember Mudau, standing on the side of the bench in Cairo, crying, in the match against Pyramids last year — and I embraced him and told him we will embrace again next year,” said Cardoso. “That belief, with hard work, commitment, capacity to define moments – which sometimes is by thin margins.”

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has opened up on why he kept faith with coach Miguel Cardoso when the results and performances were not impressive earlier in the season.

Cardoso’s future became a subject of speculation between September and January when his team were not impressive on the pitch with claims that Pitso Mosimane was set to replace him but he stayed on and guided them to their second CAF Champions League title.

“I feel proud of the coach and the group because that belief and conviction that I had was because of the group,” Motsepe told the media on Tuesday.

“I saw the way the group was wounded to the coach in the tough times and the way they held each other together in the tough times. That gave me a lot of confidence

“At the same time, the things that we said during his [Cardoso’s] interview before he came to the football club. The ambition and vision that he had and how he wanted to instill his tactics and his philosophy in our football club.

“It was very interesting and very interesting to me. It was a very talented squad and we needed something to click within the group and credit must go to the coach and technical team for finding that ability to help us click.”
