Mamelodi Sundowns have been left sweating following the injury to left-back Aubrey Modiba during Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 win over Guinea on Saturday.

Modiba went off in the second half to be replaced by Samukele Kabini and it has now been revealed that he suffered a hamstring injury.

“Aubrey has got a tight hamstring which is not nice for us but at least we still have [Fawaaz] Basadien, right? And we still have [Samukele] Kabini, hence 30 players,” said Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane.

“You can see now people are falling off and it is just one match. I know it is not easy for the football association to give me 30 players but if we want to stay at that level of results, this is the reality.”

Modiba’s absence could be a blow to Sundowns as he is their first-choice left-back and has been a mainstay in the starting XI this season.

Ngwenya: Sundowns had the best transfer window

Club legend Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya believes Mamelodi Sundowns came out on top in the recent transfer window, ahead of arch-rivals Orlando Pirates.

The window closed on Monday, 21 September 2026, and the Brazilians finished it with a late burst of aggressive local recruitment. They brought in eight players: Wandile Dube, Thabang Matuludi, Deano van Rooyen, Thabo Cele, Antonio van Wyk, Cassius Malula, Siyanda Ndlovu and Katlego Ntsabeleng.

Ngwenya singled out Ndlovu, who arrived after a productive season with Golden Arrows. He feels the Buccaneers missed out on a quality player.

“But Sundowns have done well by adding more competition and depth to their squad because of the tournaments they will be participating in this season,” he told KickOff.

“It’s going to be another tough season. I’m happy with Sundowns’ signings; they are well balanced. They have both young players and experienced ones in their squad.”

Ngwenya did not write off Pirates, though. He acknowledged that the Soweto giants also recruited well for their continental ambitions.

Matuludi to challenge Mudau for right-back

Meanwhile, Ngwenya described Matuludi as a big signing, largely because Khuliso Mudau is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with injury.

The Sundowns legend went further, suggesting that Mudau will find it hard to win back the right-back position once he is fit, both at Chloorkop and in the national team.

“There is Matuludi, who is also a big signing for Sundowns since Mudau is going to be out injured for a long time. It will be hard for Khuliso Mudau to reclaim the right-back position from Matuludi, both at the club and in the national team. I think there will be a battle for that right-back spot,” he stated.
