Latest about Mamelodi Sundowns, in the last 24 years, including Miguel Cardoso’s plea, why Masandawana extended Themba Zwane’s deal, and many more.

Cardoso plea to PSL

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has made crucial pleas to the Premier Soccer League [PSL].

The Portuguese tactician has been in South Africa for a season and a half, spearheading the Brazilians after replacing Manqoba Mngqithi. During his time at the club, he has won the Betway Premiership and, most recently, the CAF Champions League campaign.

Cardoso says a few changes must be made by the South African league’s governing body to improve football development.

“Despite I see that the South African football, I feel that there’s things that can be done to make [football better]. One simple example, why there isn’t a ball that is an official match ball that everyone plays with,” Cardoso told the Pitchside Podcast.

“When you play you will play better because you know the ball. Why there’s possibilities for teams to change venues just because they are playing Sundowns, Pirates or Chiefs when we should be playing in same conditions.

“This is simple, ‘your venue is this one, your venue that one and you cannot change it even if you want to play in a big or small stadium’. You must water your pitches, so that the footballer is quicker and simple even when you play matches like Champions League. And you have to play in those conditions because it’s mandatory to water the pitch and cut the grass.

“And this is the development of the game and the direction that South Africa must have. And the coaches mustn’t complain, I would like the game to develop here,” he concluded.

Why did Sundowns extend Zwane’s contract?

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe has explained why the club extended Themba Zwane‘s contract.

Zwane ,36, signed a new contract extension with the Brazilians last week after the side secured their second CAF Champions League title. The new deal confirms his stay until 2027 with an option to renew for a further year.

Zwane has won 15 major trophies at Sundowns – nine league titles, four domestic cups and two CAF Champions League trophies, being one of only two players at the club to achieve the African feat alongside Denis Onyango.

“You know it’s important to get the chance to always make sure that when you have players who’ve given so much of themselves, so much of their career to the club, like Themba has, it’s not always that you get the opportunity to reward such careers,” he told Pitchside Podcast.

“Football can be a beautiful thing sometimes, but sometimes also it’s a bit unfair. You don’t get to time these sort of things or find the perfect moment to show appreciation.

“But we knew that after what the captain had done in the past for us, 15 years of dedication for this club, he’s a player now that you know he came here at 21 years old. 21 Jump Street Shika came here to the club.

“15 years later we can say that he’s become a player that epitomizes Mamelodi Sundowns football. When you think of shoe-shine and piano, when you think of Sundowns football, you think of Themba Zwane. And that in itself is very special. So, for us, it was our way of saying, thank you so much for everything that you’ve done so far in this club. We knew that Shika wanted to stay,” Motsepe added.
