Kekana on losing PSL to Pirates – It just didn’t work out

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Grant Kekana has made an admission about losing the Betway Premiership title to Orlando Pirates.

The Brazilians were targeting their ninth consecutive league title, having won the previous eight in a row. However, the Buccaneers were able to finally dethrone them and end their 14-year league title drought.

“It was obviously difficult. We were trying everything in our power to win it again. It just didn’t work out,” Kekana told iDiski Times.

“But we were able to accept that and put everything and all our energy in the CAF Champions League, which we were able to take in the end.

“Considering even how we just started the season, I think it’s not the way we would have loved to start the season. We went through a lot of obstacles, challenges, and at one point, it felt like everything was against us.

“But credit to everyone in the Sundowns family. We never stopped believing; we kept believing. And it finally worked in our favour in the end.”

Sundowns to lose Maseko?

A lot of the attention is on the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng and Teboho Mokoena ahead of the FIFA World Cup, but the competition could have a big say on the future of Thapelo Maseko at club level.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Maseko is keen on staying abroad, but his future is in the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, who loaned him out to AEL Limassol in January until the end of the season.

Maseko still has two years left on his contract with Sundowns and, after some promising performances in Cyprus, the Tshwane giants are going to assess what’s best for them going forward regarding the player.

If Maseko gets opportunities to play and he makes his mark, it could have a big say on his future. Interested clubs would either have to make Sundowns a good offer of securing him on loan or there will be a transfer fee required should suitors want to have him on board permanently.

Sundowns close to signing SV Ried attacker

SABC Sport has been led to believe that Mamelodi Sundowns have made a significant breakthrough in their pursuit of SV Ried attacker Antonio van Wyk.

The Brazilians are long-time admirers of the former Stellenbosch FC winger and had previously made enquiries about his availability during the January transfer window as they explored options to strengthen their attacking department.

Sundowns were also monitoring several other targets at the time, including Puso Dithejane, who later signed for Chicago Fire in the MLS, before eventually deciding to bring in Monnapule Saleng from Orlando Pirates.

It is understood that discussions between Sundowns and SV Ried have progressed considerably in recent weeks after an earlier attempt to secure Van Wyk’s services failed to gain traction.
