Cardoso comments on Van Rooyen’s signing

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is delighted to add another right-back to his team following the arrival of Deano van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen was signed as a free agent days after terminating his contract with Orlando Pirates and will provide cover in the wake of Khuliso Mudau’s long-tern injury. Zuko Mdunyelwa also suffered an injury last Wednesday, leaving Thapelo Morena as the only right-back.

Cardoso now hopes the new signing can bed in quickly and help the team achieve its objectives.

“I knew that there were movements in trying to go for him [Deano Van Rooyen], because there was an immediate crisis after Zuko [Mdunyelwa] had to come out of the previous match, but today he was on the bench,” Cardoso said as quoted by FARPost.

“I didn’t know the extent of that injury, and I will repeat, I trust my players, and I hope that Mudau will come back and maybe surprise us to recover quicker.

“We have Thapelo Morena, we have Zuko, and now we have brought Deano. Obviously, he’s coming to help; he’s an experienced player, and let’s see what he can give us.

“Let’s hope that he will embrace us, and we also embrace him and will try to do everything to make sure that he makes us better, like all the other players that are here.”

Mamelodi Sundowns coach sets new record

Meanwhile, the Sundowns coach went into his team’s 2-1 win over Golden Arrows on Sunday on the back of a new record set in midweek.

Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Milford FC on Wednesday saw Cardoso take his unbeaten home run to 27 matches, setting a new Premier Soccer League record.
