Mamelodi Sundowns have officially announced the acquisition of former Orlando Pirates right-back Deano van Rooyen, securing the defender on a multi-year contract.

The reigning African champions confirmed the move on Sunday, putting an end to days of speculation surrounding the experienced player’s future.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are delighted to announce the signing of Deano van Rooyen, who joins us on a multi-year deal!” the club stated in an official announcement.

Good cover after Mudau, Mdunyelwa injuries

The signing provides a timely solution for head coach Miguel Cardoso, who has been grappling with a shortage of options at right-back. With both Khuliso Mudau and Zuko Mdunyelwa currently sidelined with injuries, Thapelo Morena was the only available senior player for the position.

Van Rooyen’s arrival adds crucial depth as the Brazilians prepare to compete on multiple fronts, including their CAF Champions League title defence. The move comes shortly after the defender mutually terminated his contract with Orlando Pirates, where he had become a reliable squad member after joining from Stellenbosch FC.

His departure from the Buccaneers allowed Sundowns to act swiftly and secure his services. Known as “Die Hond” (The Dog) for his tenacious work ethic, Van Rooyen now embarks on a new chapter with the Tshwane giants.

Career built on consistency for new Sundowns man

Van Rooyen brings a wealth of top-flight experience, pace, and tactical discipline to his new club. His versatility will offer Cardoso additional options for both domestic and continental fixtures.

Born in Stellenbosch, Van Rooyen began his football journey alongside his cousin, fellow professional Ashley Du Preez. He joined Stellenbosch FC as a teenager and made his senior debut in 2016 at the age of 19.

He was instrumental in the club’s promotion to the top flight in 2019 and went on to become their all-time appearance record holder with over 160 matches.

His successful spell at his hometown club culminated in him co-captaining the team to victory in the 2023 Carling Knockout Cup. Now, wearing the famous yellow and blue of Sundowns, Van Rooyen has a new opportunity to add more major honours to his career.
