Mamelodi Sundowns’ PSL opener off after PSL accepts request

Mamelodi Sundowns’ opening fixture of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season against Marumo Gallants has been postponed, following a successful request to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

With the new season set to kick off in just four days, the former champions are still abroad at a pre-season training camp in Austria.

The club’s arrival in Europe was delayed after the squad attended the memorial service for midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away unexpectedly.

Delayed pre-season for Sundowns

The PSL has seemingly granted the club’s request, with the league’s official website now marking the match, originally scheduled for August 1, as “postponed.” A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.

Sundowns are expected to return to South Africa shortly to finalise their preparations for what promises to be a demanding season. Their triumph in last season’s CAF Champions League has added several international competitions to their already packed schedule.

Brazilians set for busy season

This campaign, Masandawana will compete in a total of eight tournaments, including the CAF Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the African-Asian-Pacific Cup, making for an exceptionally congested fixture list.

With Sundowns not in action, champions Orlando Pirates will kick off the new season with a home match against newly-promoted Milford on Saturday, August 1, while Kaizer Chiefs begin their campaign away to new boys Kruger United on the same day.
