Mamelodi Sundowns Transfer News: Downs beat Pirates to World Cup star

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of Bafana Bafana international defender Thabang Matuludi.

The 27-year who has been absent from Polokwane City’s lineup this season since his return from international duty, is now set for a fresh start after a challenging period. The highly rated fullback had been heavily linked with a move away from his former club, with Orlando Pirates heavily linked with him, especially after the exit of Deano van Rooyen.

Masandawana snapped up the former Stellenbosch captain as cover for their first-choice right-back, Khuliso Mudau, who is out nursing an injury. It looked like they had given up on signing Matuludi, with the odds strongly favouring the Sea Robbers.

However, it wasn’t the case; the Brazilians were keen on having enough depth in the department.

Matuludi is a Brazilian!

On Friday, the immediate former Premier Soccer League champions confirmed the signing of Matuludi who was part of the Bafana Bafana team that took part in the 2026 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.

“Mamelodi Sundowns are excited to welcome Thabang Matuludi to the Masandawana family! Yellow Nation, let’s welcome him in the comments,” Sundowns confirmed.

During his time with Polokwane City, Matuludi played 72 games across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing two assists. He will, however, have to prove he has enough quality to be involved regularly.

Apart from Rooyen, Masandawana have also signed Antonio van Wyk (SV Ried, Austria), Siyanda Ndlovu (Golden Arrows), Ricardo Goss (return from Loan), and Cassius Mailula.
