US-based defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi has issued a stern warning to Mexico, urging them not to underestimate Bafana Bafana ahead of their opening clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two nations are set to kick off the tournament on June 11, a fixture that echoes the opening match of the 2010 World Cup hosted in South Africa. This will be their first meeting since that memorable encounter.
Excitement is building for South Africa as they prepare for their first World Cup appearance since 2010. Having qualified on merit for the first time since 2002, the team is brimming with confidence.

According to Mexican outlet Soyfutbol, Mbokazi made it clear that El Tri should expect a formidable challenge. “Mexico should know it won’t be an easy match,” the 20-year-old told Central Fox as quoted by Soccer Laduma. “It’s going to be a tough and challenging game.”
The Chicago Fire defender, formerly of Orlando Pirates, emphasised that South Africa are ready to compete at the highest level and are determined to make history by advancing to the knockout stage for the first time.
“We’re not just playing to participate,” Mbokazi declared, promising a fierce battle on the pitch.

Mbokazi is expected to be a key player in coach Hugo Broos’s squad, which is scheduled to be announced later this month. He is anticipated to play a crucial role at the heart of the South African defence.
South Africa have never gone past the knockout round in their previous three World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002 and 2010 but there is hope that they can finally do it at the 2026 edition.
A good start will be crucial to achieving that dream, hence the need for a positive result in their tournament opener against co-hosts Mexico before tricking matches against Czech Republic and South Korea.
