Orlando Pirates will bank over R56 million from the transfer of Relebohile Mofokeng to Belgian Pro League side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise according to latest reports.

The Soweto giants confirmed on Wednesday that an agreement had been reached for the talented youngster’s move to Europe.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who broke the story of Mofokeng’s move to Royale Union SG later reported that the transfer fee is just over €3 million, which translates to around R56 million. Mofokeng is expected to sign a four-year contract with his new club.

Tavolieri shared the details on social media, stating: “Mofokeng will be today in Belgium. Slightly higher than a €3M deal. (R56 million). Well & truly a 4 years contract.”

Mofokeng in Belgium to complete medical

The 21-year-old from Sharpeville travelled to Belgium to undergo a medical examination and finalise personal terms, which are the final steps before the transfer is officially completed.

In an official statement, Orlando Pirates verified the deal, formalising the departure of one of their brightest prospects.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise for the transfer of Relebohile Mofokeng,” the club announced.

Pirates reveal how deal was sealed

The Buccaneers clarified that while the clubs have settled on the fee and payment structure, the move is still contingent on the player passing his medical and agreeing to his personal contract.

Interestingly, the club revealed that the agreement was reached in principle before the recent FIFA World Cup. The announcement was deliberately delayed to allow Mofokeng to concentrate on his duties with the South African national team, Bafana Bafana.

“Both parties made the joint decision to hold off on any public announcement until after the tournament, wanting Mofokeng to focus fully on the World Cup with Bafana Bafana without the distraction of transfer talk, and to allow the national team’s historic run to take centre stage,” the statement added.
