Mngqithi blames Broos for Zwane injury: ‘It starts with respect!’

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has now blamed Bafana Bafana tactician Hugo Broos for the injury legendary midfielder Themba Zwane suffered.

The 35-year-old was subbed on Tuesday against Congo in Group K of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Mshishi was taken off in the 40th minute after suffering an Achilles injury, with Patrick Maswanganyi taking his place. However, the former Golden Arrows coach believes his star player was mismanaged despite his advanced age.

On Friday, October 11, Zwane played the entire game as Bafana Bafana claimed a 5-0 win, and the Masandawana coach felt it was not wise for the Belgian to start him again four days later against the Red Devils.

‘If we respect one another we will communicate' – Mngqithi

“I think these things start from respect. If we respect one another in life, we will always communicate better because, in one way or the other, I think we all need each other,” he told the media.

“It’s sad when you lose some of your players that you were trying the best you can to save. I know this player for him to recover after a match would not be the same as a younger player like [Siyabonga] Mabena.

“To see a player like Themba playing 90 minutes in the first match and still starting the second match, already for me, those were alarm bells. I think we could have dealt with this thing better as the two coaches. I do want to give him a call so that I talk to him directly. I don’t like to talk about someone, I prefer to talk to somebody.”

Zwane might be out for up to six months depending on the degree of the injury.
