Bafana Bafana have received a significant boost as they prepare for their World Cup opening match against Mexico, with coach Hugo Broos confirming that key defender Aubrey Modiba is nearing a return from injury.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star has been out of action with a hamstring injury sustained during the CAF Champions League final first leg on May 17. However, his recovery has advanced well during the team’s training camp in Mexico.

Broos announced that Modiba is expected to rejoin the main group for training, raising hopes that the versatile left-back will be fit for selection at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

“I think things are going well with Aubrey, and we’ll give him special treatment, so I think from tomorrow he will train with the group,” Broos told SABC Sport as per Hollywood Sports blog.

The return of the 29-year-old would be a major lift for South Africa. Modiba is a crucial part of Broos’s strategy, valued for his experience, adaptability, and impact in both defence and attack. His recent absence allowed Samukele Kabini and Bradley Cross to gain valuable experience in friendly matches.

The coach also highlighted the positive influence of the strong Mamelodi Sundowns contingent in his squad, noting that their experience in high-stakes continental competitions is beneficial for the entire team.

“It’s very important to have players in the group that are used to playing on another level than the PSL,” he explained. “With the players of Sundowns, they are already a little bit used to playing very important games where there is a lot of pressure. They can also affect the other players in their attitude and the way of training.”

South Africa has set up their base camp in Pachuca to acclimatise to the high altitude and local conditions. Broos selected the city immediately after the World Cup draw, believing it provides the perfect setting for their preparations.

“It’s very important. Once we knew the draw in December and we knew we had to play our first game against Mexico, immediately I knew we needed a place where we could prepare in relation to the high altitude,” he said.

Broos also expressed his satisfaction with the training facilities and warm reception in Pachuca, stating the team has everything it needs to get ready for one of its most significant challenges in recent years.

With Modiba on the verge of a comeback and the squad adapting well in Mexico, Bafana Bafana’s confidence is growing as they approach a formidable opening clash against the tournament co-hosts.
