Relebohile Mofokeng couldn’t resist a light-hearted jab at Orlando Pirates’ arch-rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, during a farewell dinner celebrating his transfer to Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

The talented winger has secured his move to Europe, signing a four-year contract with the Belgian Pro League side. The transfer was officially confirmed by the club on July 2, putting an end to widespread speculation about his future.

Mofokeng, who will wear the number 38 shirt, finalised the deal after his recent involvement with Bafana Bafana at the 2026 World Cup. He bypassed the team’s return flight from North America to complete his medical and agree to personal terms in Belgium before turning home.

Before his departure, the 21-year-old hosted a farewell event in his hometown of Sharpeville for close friends and family. It was there, during a speech, that he playfully targeted the Sea Robbers’ Soweto rivals.

“I am going to keep it short,” Mofokeng stated. “I will only say that I will make all of you proud. I will do everything I can, just like I did at Pirates.”

“And… yeah, I think Kaizer Chiefs can breathe now that I am no longer there,” said Mofokeng before laughing out loud.

Playmaker made his mark at Pirates

The Vaal-born attacker leaves Orlando Pirates with a reputation as one of the most exciting young talents in recent South African football history.

His final season with the club was particularly impressive, as he contributed 12 goals and 13 assists in 44 matches, playing a crucial role in the team’s success as the Buccaneers ended their 14-year wait for a Premier Soccer League title and also claimed the MTN8 and Carling Knockout.

He concludes his tenure with the Soweto giants having made 125 senior appearances, scoring 29 goals and providing 31 assists across all competitions.
