Mofokeng told to address one shortcoming before overseas move amid Monaco links

Former Orlando Pirates forward Lebohang Mokoena has advised Relebohile Mofokeng to improve his physical attributes if he wants to succeed abroad.

Mofokeng has been linked to clubs abroad in the last two years with the latest reports claiming that French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco are interested in signing him at the end of the season.

Mokoena is among those who feel Rele, as the Mofokeng is popularly known, should grab the opportunity but wants him to bulk up if he is to hit the ground running in France or anywhere else in Europe.

“I would really jump at this opportunity because the French league is quite a good league. If I was Rele I would be on the first plane as soon as the season ends and I am right there in France,” Mokoena said on SoccerBeat before enumerating what the 21-year-old must improve.

What should Mofokeng work on?

“There is one aspect that Rele needs to work on and you could see also in the previous friendly game against Panama, his physical attributes a little bit, especially in the No.10 role. It is something Monaco would want to try and work on because they are very physical out there.

“You know internationally, the boys are big. In France, centre-backs are about 1’8, 1’9 very, very tall so I think if a little bit of that aspect can be improved in his game, he can fit in like a glove at Monaco.”

The former Pirates winger hopes Mofokeng can finally secure his long-awaited move abroad, using himself as an example when explaining how missing out on such transfers can impact players.

Ex-Pirates star hopes Rele gets his move

“They play beautiful football and have a lot of youngsters in the team,” Mokoena said on why Monaco suits Mofokeng.

“All South Africans want to see the boy venture out and test himself against the best. We have seen enough of Rele and if Pirates win the league, he is going to be the player of the season so it would be a great send-off because all of us have been saying; ‘when is he getting his chance?’ and it is frustrating.

“I have been in that situation where you have these offers and players around you are being given these offers and leave the club and you are stuck. You feel like luck is not on your side and if it is a fair deal, Pirates should let the boy go,” the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns attacker further stated.
