Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi feels more should be done to protect players from dangerous fouls that may even end their careers.
In the Premier Soccer League game between the Soweto Giants and SuperSport United, Venezuela international Edson Castillo suffered a clumsy challenge from Bilal Baloyi. Surprisingly, the officials felt it was the former who committed a mistake despite replays suggesting otherwise.
The midfielder was subbed moments later and has since been sidelined until 2025 which is a massive blow for the Glamour Boys.
Nabi has now argued that more should be done to ensure players are protected to avoid such incidents.
‘I didn't do enough to raise my voice' – Nabi
“I would like to take this opportunity to highlight and talk about Edson Castillo who has been injured against SuperSport,” he said ahead of the Carling Knockout quarter-final game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We want to express our deepest support for him and his family for the tackle against him, to his wife and kids that love Kaizer Chiefs. We believe we should do more to prevent those types of injuries, one of the rules in football is to protect all players on the field.
“I feel I didn’t do enough to raise my voice against the actions, which were called a foul against us on the day. We truly support Castillo, with all our hearts with him in these difficult times.”
On Saturday, Amakhosi will be aiming at avenging the 2-1 loss suffered by Masandawana in the Premier Soccer League assignment a couple of weeks ago.
The last time Chiefs defeated the Brazilians was in April 2021.
