Nedbank Cup final: Chiefs vs Pirates – How they should line up

Published on by

The Nedbank Cup final this Saturday promises another captivating instalment of the Soweto Derby as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates clash for silverware at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

With the stakes incredibly high, the performance of individual players will be crucial in determining the outcome.

Afrik-Foot looks at how the two teams should line up.

CHIEFS

Bruce Bvuma (Goalkeeper):

Having established himself as Chiefs' number one goalkeeper midway through the season, Bvuma carries the responsibility of being the last line of defence. Despite occasional errors, his experience in high-pressure matches could be vital.

Dillan Solomons (Right-back):

With Reeve Frosler injured, Solomons is the likely choice at right-back. He faces the formidable task of containing the in-form Relebohile Mofokeng but possesses the pace required to challenge the skilful Pirates winger.

Inacio Miguel (Right Centre-back):

Returning from injury, Miguel has publicly stated his readiness to start. His presence could provide a much-needed boost to a Chiefs defence that has appeared vulnerable recently.

Zitha Kwinika (Left Centre-back):

With several centre-back options sidelined, Kwinika is set to feature. Having played in the recent league derby, he has recent experience against the Pirates attack, which may have bolstered his confidence.

Dove Edmilson (Left-back):

Likely shifting to left-back due to Bradley Cross's red card in the previous derby, the left-footed Edmilson will need to adapt quickly and contribute defensively and potentially in attack.

Thabo Cele (Central Midfielder):

Carefully managed back from injury, Cele is expected to be fit and ready for this crucial match. His battle in midfield against Pirates' key players like Thalente Mbatha and Makhaula will be pivotal.

Yusuf Maart (Central Midfielder):

A consistent performer against Pirates, Maart famously scored in their last Nedbank Cup meeting (a semi-final loss). As a key leader, he will be looked upon to drive the team and potentially become the first Chiefs captain since Tefu Mashamaite in 2015 to lift a trophy.

Gaston Sirino (Attacking Midfielder):

The experienced former Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker is tasked with being Chiefs' creative hub. Sirino will need to link effectively with the wingers and generate scoring opportunities for Amakhosi.

Pule Mmodi (Right Winger):

Mmodi has been causing problems for the Pirates defence in past derbies with his pace and skill. Operating from the right flank, he will aim to break down the Buccaneers' backline.

Glody Lilepo (Left Winger):

Having opened the scoring in the recent league derby, Lilepo arrives with confidence. Chiefs will hope his creativity on the left flank adds another dimension to their attack.

Wandile Duba (Striker):

Duba scored the decisive goal that saw Chiefs eliminate favourites Mamelodi Sundowns en route to the final. Coach Nabi will likely trust the confident young striker to trouble the Pirates defence.

PIRATES

Sipho Chaine (Goalkeeper):

Rested in the midweek league game, the Bafana Bafana international is the undisputed number one. His experience in numerous cup finals since joining Pirates makes him a reliable presence between the posts.

Deano Van Rooyen (Right-back):

Seemingly recovered from injury, Van Rooyen is expected to start and will be tasked with nullifying the threat posed by Glody Lilepo on Chiefs' left wing.

Nkosinathi Sibisi (Right Centre-back):

Available again after suspension, Sibisi's recent form and confidence might see him favoured over Tapelo Xoki. He adds solidity to the central defence.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Left Centre-back):

A recent, yet quick, adaptation to the first team, Mbokazi has become a regular starter. His solid performances in big games suggest he is ready to help thwart the Chiefs attack.

Deon Hotto (Left-back):

An unused substitute in midweek, the dynamic Namibian winger is expected to return to the starting lineup at left-back. His energy and attacking impetus from the flank are crucial for Pirates.

Makhehlene Makhaula (Defensive Midfielder):

Having owned the number six role this season, Makhaula's vital defensive “dirty work” has been instrumental in Pirates' success. He will be key in disrupting Chiefs' midfield rhythm.

Thalente Mbatha (Central Midfielder):

Mbatha provides the link between midfield and attack. Comfortable in high-profile matches, he will be tasked with initiating Pirates' attacking plays and combining effectively with Makhaula and the forwards.

Patrick Maswanganyi (Attacking Midfielder):

Having returned from injury and scoring in midweek, Pirates' playmaker Maswanganyi is the creative engine of the team. His ability to unlock defences will be critical.

Relebohile Mofokeng (Left Winger):

Rapidly a fan favourite and big-game player, Mofokeng scored the winner in the last derby. His pace, skill, and knack for crucial goals make him a primary threat, reminiscent of his Nedbank Cup final heroics against Mamelodi Sundowns last season.

Mohau Nkota (Right Winger):

The left-footed Nkota has had a breakthrough season, contributing important goals, including in the CAF Champions League. He provides a potent threat from the right flank, potentially testing Edmilson Dove.

Evidence Makgopa (Striker):

Having scored in the recent derby win, Makgopa comes into the final with confidence, seemingly having cemented his place as the lead striker. His ability to finish chances will be key for the Buccaneers.
