Mbuthuma & Mofokeng shine as Orlando Pirates overtake Sundowns in PSL race

Orlando Pirates went top of the Premier Soccer League table thanks to their 3-0 win against AmaZulu at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Soweto giants came into the match knowing they needed maximum points to stay in the race for the crown. Anything less than maximum points could potentially seal their fate and give the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, a huge advantage.

Usuthu believed Kaizer Chiefs would still drop points despite their form, explaining why they needed a victory to sustain hopes of playing in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Mbuthuma ends goal-drought

As expected, Bucs started the game on a high note amid cheers from their fans who had filled the Orlando Amstel Arena.

Yanela Mbuthuma gave the supporters something to cheer in the 14th minute when he found the back of the net, with Tshepang Moremi providing the assist. It was Mbuthuma’s first goal for Pirates since mid-February when he was on target in 3-0 victory over Marumo Gallants.

Bucs continued to press for the second strike to cool the nerves of all associated with the club. But they had to wait until the stroke of halftime before the inform Relebohile Mofokeng found Oswin Appollis in a prime area, and the former Polokwane City man made no mistake.

Mofokeng’s show continues

Bafana Bafana international Mofokeng then scored his sixth goal for the club in just four games after being picked by Nkosikhona Ndaba in the hour mark. The goal was a reward for his hard work and dedication from the first whistle.

Usuthu looked lost as Pirates enjoyed possession and attacked at will as players freely expressed themselves.

The victory took the Sea Robbers to 58 points from 25 games, two points more than Masandawana, who have two matches at hand. The huge test for Bucs will be against traditional rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby on Sunday, April 26, at the FNB Stadium.
