Orlando Pirates face prospect of losing experienced defender for free

Published on by

Orlando Pirates could be about to lose a key defender following reports that his contract is ending and no talks have been held.

Pirates are already busy in the transfer market with two midfielders close to joining but they might need to strengthen in the full-back areas as well.

This follows reports that experienced defender Deon Hotto is yet to begin talks over a new deal yet his contract will expire next month.

Hotto is one of the most important members of the club with his ability to play both at left-back and on the wing impressing departed coach Jose Riveiro who used every opportunity to maximise his talents.

According to iDiski Times, Hotto could be available on a free transfer if no talks are held over a potential new deal as the Buccaneers are yet to decide if they want to retain him or let him leave.

At 34, the Namibian is entering the twilight years of his career but his performances suggest he is still at optimum levels with his experience also needed for a club like Pirates that has been promoting lots of young players in recent years.

Hotto has been at Pirates since joining from Bidvest Wits in 2020 and has made 200 appearances, scoring 27 goals while providing 38 assists, and has won six trophies; four MTNs and two Nedbank Cups.

Who could replace Hotto at Pirates?

The Namibian international joined Pirates amid a tough bidding war with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns and has been a great servant to the Soweto giants during his time at the club.

Hotto will not lack suitors if Pirates decide against renewing his deal while a possible departure could open up another bidding war for a left-back as Stellenbosch FC’s Fawaaz Basadien has been on the radar of both the Buccaneers and Chiefs.

Basadien’s stock continues to rise as he has just been crowned Stellenbosch’s Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season which will likely see his price increase.
