Orlando Pirates legend seconds Broos on Mofokeng’s Europe reports – ‘He is not ready’

Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng has been heavily linked with a move to Europe after a successful 2023/24 campaign.

The 19-year-old played 38 games for the Sea Robbers across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing six assists in the process. It was also the same season he made his Bafana Bafana debut – against Zimbabwe in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly, RB Salzburg and Rangers are among the teams reportedly chasing the teenager.

There have been discussions about the best decision Mofokeng should make to ensure he continues to develop and reach his potential. Among those who shared their opinion is Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos who argued the attacker needs another season in the Premier Soccer League before thinking about an overseas move.

Mofokeng should establish himself at Bucs

Former Pirates captain Siyabonga Sangweni argues Mofokeng is talented but he should seal his place at the Soweto Giants first, be a factor before opting out.

“I know many people are saying he should go to Europe now which is good, but I think he should stay for at least another season or two. By that time, he will be ready for any challenge coming his way,” he told SNL24.

“He should cement his place first both at Pirates and Bafana Bafana then he can move to Europe. He should show that he is the boss, own the team, and keep focused.

“Mofokeng should not relax [but] show desire to want more. You know everything is his now, and as long as he can remain humble, he will go far.”

The former defender has further explained how winning a regular spot in the national team will be beneficial for the young winger.

“He is ready for the big stage with Bafana Bafana. You know, if you can play in the Soweto Derby at that young age and give your best, means you are ready for the national team,” Sangweni continued.

“The more games he plays for the national team, the better he will be prepared for the move to Europe, but it should not be now. Give him time to grow and understand the game. Then when he is ready, he will make an impact in Europe.”

What is Mofokeng's stand?

In an initial interview, the winger said he is open regarding his future since football is the same whether in Mzansi or abroad.

“I am playing for Pirates and I am only focusing on Pirates [but] If teams want me they will have to speak to the chairman, I don’t know anything,” Mofokeng told the media.

“I am only playing for Pirates, I am not focusing on the rumours. Football is football; it is the same, whether you are playing in the Premier League or in the PSL, football is the same, nothing changes.

“It’s just the facilities they have there are different from here but everything else is the same.”
