Latest Orlando Pirates news, including calls to sign a PSL midfielder and how Buccuneers can equal Kaizer Chiefs’ MTN8 all-time record.

Pirates urged to swoop for Bafana sensation

Orlando Pirates legend Benedict Vilakazi has told the club’s recruitment department to go after Durban City midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel, insisting the 26-year-old is exactly the type of player the Buccaneers need as they continue their push in the CAF Champions League.

Vilakazi’s comments follow Poggenpoel’s smooth step up to international football, where he has impressed Bafana Bafana boss Pitso Mosimane since earning his first senior call-up.

The former Pirates captain believes the midfielder already has the composure and quality to handle the demands of continental competition, and argues a move to Mayfair is the obvious next step given the club’s ambitions.

Speaking to iDiski TV, Vilakazi made his admiration for the player clear, saying Pirates are the only side he should consider joining given their Champions League commitments.

“These are the type of players we want at Pirates because we are playing in the Champions League. There’s no way he should go to another team except Orlando Pirates,” he said as per GOAL.

Poggenpoel has already proven he can deliver under pressure, playing a key role in Durban City’s recent Nedbank Cup triumph. His stock has risen further on the back of a composed display in central midfield as South Africa controlled possession to beat Eritrea, a performance that has only strengthened calls for Pirates to make their move.

Bucs can equal Chiefs’ all-time MTN8 record

Orlando Pirates will be chasing an unprecedented fifth successive MTN8 title when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on October 10 — a game that also carries historic weight against bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates have reached 20 previous Top Eight finals since the competition began in 1972, winning 14 and losing six. Saturday’s showdown with Sundowns will be their 21st final appearance, drawing them level with Chiefs for the most finals reached in the competition’s history.

Chiefs have 15 titles from their finals but haven’t lifted the trophy since 2014, meaning a Pirates win would also see the Buccaneers draw level with the Amakhosi at the top of the all-time winners’ list — a symbolic shift for a competition Chiefs once dominated.
