Pirates latest news
These are the types of players we want at Pirates!
Benedict Vilakazi has heaped huge praise on Bafana Bafana midfielder Brooklyn Poggenpoel who he wants to see don the black and white of Orlando Pirates.
Poggenpoel put in a masterclass performance in the middle of the park after injury forced Bathusi Aubaas off early in the clash against Eritrea.
The 26-year-old Durban City player instantly became the topic of discussion after the match with South African football fans raving about his performance on the night.
‘Tso’ was equally impressed by the shift Poggenpoel put in and said if it was up to him, he would fork out R5,5 million to whisk him away from the defending Nedbank Cup champions.
“Once and always. These are the types of players we want at Pirates. We playing Champions League, so there’s no other way he can go to another team except coming to Orlando Pirates,” he said as quoted by iDiski Times.
“After this performance, I can give him R5,5 million [to join Pirates]. This boy Poggenpoel just reminded me of his uncle [Shane Poggenpoel]. He used to play in that position. Played for Ajax, played for SuperSport United commanding that midfield.

“It was difficult to face Poggenpoel and when I look at this boy, he plays the very same position, he’s good with the ball, he’s got a good eyesight. When he goes to receive the ball, he knows where he goes and for me it’s like he’s been there for years and that’s quality,” he concluded.
Bucs star’s advice to upcoming players
Orlando Pirates starlet Mpho Padime has reserved advice for budding footballers especially those hailing from townships.
The 19-year-old winger was one of the standout performers as Pirates’ reserves made history by winning the DStv Diski Challenge title for the first time. Padime finished the campaign with 10 goals and nine assists, earning recognition as the DStv Diski Challenge Player of the Season.
His performances earned him a senior call-up, with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou taking him to Spain for pre-season alongside fellow academy products Cristian Derbyshire and Simphiwe Masilela.
That pre-season proved to be another important step in Padime’s development, before he made his first-team debut and was subsequently called up to the South Africa U23 squad.
For the youngster, however, the rapid progression has been less about looking back at what he has achieved and more about continuing to work.
“For me the last few months I have been happy and those ahead of me are pushing me to work hard and other things will come,” Padime said.

Padime has not forgotten where his journey started, though, and believes his story can serve as encouragement to youngsters playing football in townships and local leagues.
“What I can [say] to them is that don’t give up, work hard and playing eKasi doesn’t mean you are no one because you never know who is watching and where you will end up.
“So, keep working hard and God will always help you,” he concluded.
