Orlando Pirates to miss key midfielder for Cape Town clash

Orlando Pirates will be without midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula for their clash against Cape Town City on Wednesday.

Pirates are looking to move level on points with leaders Mamelodi Sundowns when they face Cape Town but will have to do it without one of their key players in Makhaula.

The midfielder will be absent as he serves a one-match suspension after accumulating four yellow cards in matches against SuperSport United, AmaZulu FC, Richards Bay FC and Magesi FC.

It means coach Jose Riveiro will have to shuffle his pack in central midfield in the absence of the 35-year-old former AmaZulu star.

It creates room for Miguel Timm, Phillip Ndlondlo and Selaelo Rasebotja whose playing time has significantly reduced this season.

Timm is yet to play in the PSL this campaign, getting just 49 minutes in three cup games so far, while Ndlondlo has one CAF Champions League start and 14 minutes in the PSL, as a substitute.

Rasebotja, meanwhile, has played in eight matches, seven as a substitute, with three coming in the league.

Pirates can go top with victory

It will, however, depend on how Riveiro wants to set up as he has previously preferred to pair Thalente Mbatha with Kabelo Dlamini in central midfield while Patrick Maswanganyi plays ahead of them when he wants to go all-out attack.

Makhaula and Mbatha have formed a good defensive midfield partnership at Pirates, having made 21 appearances in all competitions this season.

Pirates, who are second on the log with 27 matches, can move to the top of the table with a win on Wednesday, as they have the same goal difference with Sundowns heading into the match.
