Ouaddou discloses how Riveiro-era videos helped Pirates demolish Chiefs

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has revealed how old videos from previous regimes helped his players thrash Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby.

Pirates demolished bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs, beating them 3-0, courtesy of goals from Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa on Saturday, handing Amakhosi their biggest derby loss in 25 years.

Ouaddou says winning the game was not just about tactical work but also getting into the minds of his players and he used different ways to achieve that.

How Riveiro videos inspired Pirates

“We spoke to the players in many meetings during the week to try and manage their emotions,” Ouaddou said. “We knew that for most of them, it was their first derby. It was important to work with them mentally.”

“We didn’t want them to play the game before, but we wanted them to be calm and deliver. When you have pressure that puts in light all your qualities,” he added.

With a number of Soweto Derby debutants such as Moremi, Appollis, Kamogelo Sebelebele, Lebone Seema and Yanela Mbuthuma in the starting XI, it was important to prepare the players mentally and Ouaddou was not shy to use some clips from the regime of his predecessor Jose Riveiro to get a tune out of his players.

“We made a lot of WhatsApp this week, showing the positive videos and all the great goals that they scored and games they achieved, including under Jose Riveiro and previous coaches,” Ouaddou further stated.

Ouaddou keen to maintain momentum

“We tried to create a narrative and story, to make this event easier mentally. It was a workshop for us because you can see on the bench that the technical staff was very calm – I think that was the first game that happened.”

Pirates came into the game under massive pressure, having lost back-to-back matches to Mamelodi Sundowns and Casric Stars, but they responded in style and their coach now hopes to see them build onto that momentum.

“Really, I am proud of them,” Ouaddou said. “So, we have to build on that kind of performance. So, it was a reference performance. So, we have to build on that for the rest of the season.”
