Phili’s injury opens window of opportunity for Kaizer Chiefs youngster

An eight-week injury sidelining Langelihle Phili could be the opening Faiz Abrahams needs to solidify his place at Kaizer Chiefs, beginning with their Premier Soccer League (PSL) clash against Siwelele on Sunday.

Phili, who had enjoyed a stellar start at Amakhosi since his transfer from Stellenbosch, was ruled out last week with an ankle injury, presenting another attacking dilemma for coach Fernando da Cruz.

The 21-year-old had quickly become a key figure for the team, finding the net against Mamelodi Sundowns and being named Player of the Match in the game against Sekhukhune United.

His unfortunate absence now paves the way for Abrahams, another recent arrival from Stellenbosch, to make his mark.

Abrahams keen on regular game time

Abrahams made his first appearance for Chiefs in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Richards Bay, playing the final 24 minutes as a substitute at the King Zwelithini Stadium. The pacy winger was brought on as an inverted right winger, tasked by Da Cruz with helping to overturn a 2-1 deficit.

“The coach told me to go out there and create chances for us to get back into the game,” Abrahams revealed during an interview with the club.

While Chiefs managed to salvage a point thanks to a late equaliser from Siphesihle Ndlovu, Abrahams believed the team’s effort warranted a better result.

“We played well enough to win the game but we had a couple of misfortunes which we will definitely work on cutting out going forward,” he commented.

How Phili’s injury could benefit Chiefs star

The 21-year-old’s debut came shortly after he joined Chiefs on a season-long loan from Stellenbosch, which includes an option for a permanent transfer.

With Phili expected to be out until October, Abrahams has a prime window to become an indispensable part of Da Cruz’s squad, starting with the upcoming match against Siwelele as Chiefs aim to continue their strong league start.

Abrahams has already demonstrated his ability to offer width, creativity, and a unique attacking dimension. However, the winger is aware that he must build on his initial cameo to secure a regular spot.

As Phili faces a significant spell on the sidelines, the timing appears perfect for Abrahams to transform a promising debut into a consistent run in the Kaizer Chiefs starting lineup.
