Orlando Pirates transfers: Bucs beat PSL rivals to highly-rated youngster

Orlando Pirates have completed the signing of teenage prospect Edmilson Chaney from Hope FC, immediately loaning the winger back to the newly-promoted club for the upcoming season.

In a separate deal, Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge defender Lonwabo Magugwana will also join Hope FC on loan, according to iDiski Times.

The 19-year-old Chaney caught the attention of the Buccaneers, who moved to secure his services before allowing him to continue his development with Hope FC, nicknamed “The Immortals,” for another year.

Signing spree after promotion

Hope FC have been notably active in the transfer market as they prepare for their first season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The club achieved promotion from the ABC Motsepe League just one season after acquiring the status of Sea Point Swifts in 2025.

To bolster their squad, The Immortals have already brought in experienced former Pirates midfielder Miguel Timm and are reportedly close to signing Lyle Lakay. Former Kaizer Chiefs star Keagan Dolly is also currently undergoing an assessment with the team.

The club has also invested in youth, adding Nande Wetbooi, Thamsanqa Magwaza, Selwyn Stevens, Tauric Gamaldien, and Tyler Cicero. Following the departure of coach Dylan Dean, the team will be led by Clayton Daniels and Zama Diyelela.

Pirates building squad for the future

Sources indicate that the Western Cape-based champions are expected to make further signings as they continue to build a competitive squad for the new season.
