Pirates legend backs Broos on Kaizer Chiefs snub – ‘They shouldn’t be in World Cup squad’

Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo has voiced his support for Hugo Broos’ recent Bafana Bafana squad selection, making a bold prediction about the international future of Kaizer Chiefs players.

The national team coach named a 38-man preliminary squad for the upcoming friendly against Panama, which notably features no players from the Soweto giants. Mayoyo believes this omission is justified, citing a lack of desire from the Amakhosi camp.

“I believe this selection is a sign that none of the Kaizer Chiefs players are going to the World Cup,” Mayoyo told KickOff. “They are currently not doing well.”

Chiefs have endured a difficult season, and despite a squad that appears strong on paper, they are struggling to secure a top-eight finish with only 12 matches left.

The team’s poor form has been attributed by some to the co-coaching duo of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, who have reportedly failed to create a cohesive unit.

Mayoyo was unequivocal in his assessment, stating that the players’ current performance level does not warrant a national team call-up.

“No, Kaizer Chiefs players should not be in the World Cup squad. They are not doing well,” he asserted. “What is happening at Chiefs is strange; it’s not normal for a whole team to underperform. If a team is not doing well, then it means the players are not doing well.”

With the World Cup three months away, Mayoyo advised the Bafana Bafana coach to maintain his focus on the group he has already selected.

“What the Bafana Bafana coach needs to do now, since the World Cup is less than three months away, is to focus on the pool of his 38-man squad,” he concluded.
