Benni wishes Kaizer Chiefs were in title race – ‘SA is blessed when Khosi are playing well’

Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy is thrilled to see Orlando Pirates challenging Mamelodi Sundowns for the PSL title.

Pirates have maintained a strong challenge for the league title and are currently top of the table with 48 points, one ahead of Sundowns, although they have played one more match than the Brazilians.

That has got fans believing that a first title since 2012 is imminent and McCarthy, who was part of the team that claimed that crown 16 years ago, would love to see a different champion this time around.

“It would be nice if there is a different winner because it makes the league interesting,” McCarthy said on SuperSport TV.

“Sundowns have dominated the last 10 years because the management, recruitment team, coaches they have had and people managing the club are doing the right things year in year out and now, it is for everyone to follow and Pirates have followed suit which is great.”

However, while he wants Pirates to win, McCarthy, a Kaizer Chiefs fan, thinks Amakhosi should also be in the mix to make it interesting.

As the most popular club in the country, the Bafana Bafana all-time top scorer thinks South African football is poorer when the Glamour Boys are struggling and hopes they can get their house in order soon.

“I am longing to get Chiefs there also because South African football is only blessed when the mighty Khosi is playing [well]. When Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns are banging the drum the right way, then our football is in the best place it can be,” he added.

“It is not the same when one of those three giants is not living up to the expectations but I am sure it will change.”

Chiefs have been left behind by both Pirates and Sundowns as they are 18 points behind the league leaders, even though they have played three games less, with their next match being on Sunday against Durban City FC.
