Hugo Broos has confirmed he will quit coaching after the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.

The 73-year-old has served Bafana Bafana since 2021 after taking over from Molefi Ntseki, who had failed to help the team qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), that was staged and won by Cameroon.

There have been a couple of names that have been suggested to the South African Football Association, SAFA. However, Orlando Pirates legend Edward Motale is adamant Helman Mkahelele is the most qualified.

Mkhalele should succeed Broos

The South Africa legend believes Mkhalele knows what Broos has been doing for the team to succeed, and he will be employing the same. tactic.

“Seconded – Helman ‘Midnight Express’ should be our next head coach for Bafana Bafana because what he has learnt – I think he has learnt so many things from Hugo Broos, so he won’t disappoint,” Motale said as quoted by SABC Sport.

“And as a former football player, he’s a former Bafana Bafana players, he knows the system and he knows the culture – I was with him when we won the AFCON years back. So everything is in here – in his hands.,” he added.

Mkhalele will need fans’ support

South Africa fans

“All I say to South Africans, I say, ‘If it happens that Helman is our head coach next year, please let’s give him support through all odds,” he said.

“We’ve seen with Nigeria; we’ve seen with Ghana, Ivory Coast – the list is endless, they are coached by their own, so let’s give him the 100 percent support that we can so that we can start believing in our own.

“I’m not saying Europe is bad but this time around, Helman is there, why must we be running around?”
