Pirates ready new contract to keep striker – Report

Orlando Pirates are reportedly preparing to offer Evidence Makgopa a new contract as reward for his strong performances over the past two seasons, according to iDiski Times.

The forward’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. Other reports suggest that Pirates will extend the former Baroka man’s stay with more three years.

Makgopa, who joined Orlando Pirates from Baroka in 2022, has established himself as a key player for the club.

After overcoming an injury-plagued first season with the Buccaneers, the forward has since contributed 13 goals and four assists in 58 matches, frequently featuring in rotation with Tshegofatso Mabasa under Jose Riveiro.

Makgopa has become a key player in Hugo Broos' national team setup, with his commendable performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

In September, Riveiro praised Makgopa for the hard work he consistently demonstrates, even when starting on the bench or not playing at all.

“He was always there, but he is competing with [Tshegofatso] Mabasa, he is competing with [Boitumelo] Radiopane in the position,” said Pirates coach Jose Riveiro.

“Again, he is working so hard, always ready to help. Whether he gets one minute, he gives you everything in that one minute, or whether he gets 10 minutes. He is an example for all the other players.

“He performed in an an excellent way in a tournament like AFCON and now that he is going through a different period, like being on the bench, he's been an example for everyone around on what it means to be a professional.”
