Pirates revenge match in Caf Champions League doubtful as opponents stunned

The Sea Robbers are determined to go all the way this season after an embarrassing early exit in the previous edition.

It seems Orlando Pirates will not avenge against Jwaneng Galaxy if they make it to the second preliminary round of the Caf Champions League.

In the 2023/24 edition, the Sea Robbers were eliminated by the Botswanians through penalties after an aggregate 1-1 scoreline in the two legs played on a home and away basis.

Bucs were paired against CS Disciples in the first preliminary round while Galaxy were set against African Stars.

No revenge for Pirates?

Jwaneng Galaxy started their journey on Friday against the Namibian outfit in the match that was staged at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.

A strike from Willy Stephanus in the sixth minute was all that the hosts needed to silence their visitors.

Galaxy will now need to better that result in the second leg to make it to the next phase and stand a chance of playing Pirates again.

The South Africans are determined to win their game against Disciples to make it to the second preliminary round.

Riveiro warned against fielding a weaker team

Meanwhile, Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi has warned coach Jose Riveiro against underrating his opponents and fielding a weaker team like he did in the last edition.

“What happened last season should not happen, and I think it was a learning curve for the coach,” Lekgwathi told iDiski Times.

“Playing away and you are playing with your so-called B team, and you want to come back home and say I’ll cover the score, or I’ll settle the score and start playing your first team players.

“I think for him it was a learning curve. You play away, play your first team players, win the game, come back to SA and put some of your senior or regular players on the bench and when things don’t go well, you put them in.”
