Pirates defender reveals fiery Ouaddou speech that led to Champions League win

Orlando Pirates left-back Neo Rapoo has shared insights into the pre-match instructions from head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou that fueled their victory against La Cure Waves.

The Buccaneers secured a 3-1 win over the Mauritian side in the second leg of their CAF Champions League First Preliminary Round tie at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday. After a goalless first leg, the victory was essential for their progression.

However, the Soweto giants had to fight for their place in the next round, staging a comeback after conceding first. Goals from Yanela Mbuthuma, Kabelo Kgositsile and Kamogelo Sebelebele ultimately sealed the win and set up a clash with Namibian champions African Stars.

Rapoo lifts lid on Ouaddou’s speech

According to Rapoo, Ouaddou’s tactical advice to start strong and score early was a key motivator for the team.

“Coach told us that we have to score in the first 15 minutes, and I think the guys were motivated because they want to reach the final stages of the CAF,” Rapoo explained to OP TV.

He also highlighted the advantage of playing at home, crediting the supporters for their role in the team’s performance.

“We knew that when we come here, home, we have like a 12th man supporter, so we have to start with good intensity, score first, and then just keep going and score as many goals as we can,” he added.

First half demolition job from Pirates

“We knew what we had to do. They were not going to beat us at home, so we just had to keep going forward and creating chances, and we knew we were going to get goals.”

Pirates heeded Ouaddou’s advice as all the three goals were scored in the first half before they took their foot off the pedal in the second half, a decision that left the tactician disappointed that they did not go for a bigger winning margin.

The Buccaneers will turn their attention to the Premier Soccer League with a match against Durban City up next at their backyard on Thursday.
