Orlando Pirates vs Golden Arrows: Match Preview, Predictions and Betting Tips

Published on by

Orlando Pirates return to Betway Premiership action on Tuesday, April 7 when they host Golden Arrows at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Buccaneers sit second on the table on 51 points from 22 matches, two behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who took their tally to 53 with their 4-1 win over Chippa United on Friday.

This is a fixture that Pirates have dominated in recent years, winning all five of the last meetings between the two sides without conceding.

Golden Arrows, managed by Manqoba Mngqithi, arrive in Soweto in eighth place with 28 points and little left to play for beyond a top eight finish.

It is a match that, on paper at least, looks like a formality for the hosts.

Whether it plays out that way is another matter.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have been in remarkable form heading into the international break, and the question now is whether they can pick up where they left off.

Their most recent league outing was a 6-0 demolition of TS Galaxy away from home on March 22, a result that sent a clear message to the rest of the division.

Prior to that, they beat Polokwane City 2-1 away, dispatched Richards Bay 2-0 at home and hammered Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium.

The only blemish in that run was a 1-1 draw against Siwelele at home on March 14.

That gives Pirates a league form line of W-W-W-D-W across their last five outings, a record befitting title contenders.

At home specifically, the Buccaneers have been close to impenetrable, winning nine of their 11 league matches in Soweto and conceding just seven goals in the process while scoring 23.

Their only home defeats came against Sekhukhune United in the league opener last August, when they lost 1-0, before a 2-1 loss to Sundowns in February. That remains an outlier in an otherwise exceptional campaign on their own patch.

The numbers across the entire season tell their own story: 40 goals scored and just nine conceded in 22 league games gives Pirates the second best attack and the best defence in the Betway Premiership.

A goal difference of +31 is comfortably the largest in the division.

Golden Arrows, by contrast, have had a season of inconsistency.

Eight wins, four draws and 10 defeats tell the story of a side that can beat anyone on their day but too often fall short when it matters.

They have scored 28 goals this season, which is actually the fourth highest total in the league, but they have also shipped 26, making them one of the more porous defences in the top half.

Mngqithi has been working with a largely youthful squad this season and his side have shown flashes of real quality, particularly in the Nedbank Cup where they reached the quarterfinals before losing on penalties to Durban City.

Away from home, however, their record has been poor, and a trip to the league leaders is not the fixture any struggling side would choose.

With Sundowns maintaining their onsalught and only eight games remaining, Pirates cannot afford any complacency here.

Every dropped point could prove decisive in what is shaping up to be a two horse title race that could go down to the final day.

Head to Head

This fixture has been completely one sided in recent seasons.

Pirates have won all five of their last meetings with Golden Arrows, and it would take a significant upset for that run to end here.

The reverse fixture earlier this season, played at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on November 5, saw the Buccaneers claim a commanding 3-1 victory.

Nkosikhona Ndaba opened the scoring before Yamela Mbuthuma struck twice to seal the result, with Thokozani Khumalo netting a consolation for the hosts.

The last time Golden Arrows managed to beat Orlando Pirates was back in the 2020/21 season, when they recorded a shock 2-0 victory at Princess Magogo Stadium.

That is approaching five years ago now.

At Orlando Stadium, the record is even more skewed, with Arrows’ last away win over Pirates at this venue coming nearly a decade ago.

Historically, many of the meetings at Orlando Stadium have been tight and cagey affairs, with several ending as goalless draws, but when Pirates have broken the deadlock at home in this fixture, they have tended to run away with it.

Team News

Orlando Pirates will welcome back Nkosinathi Sibisi and Thalente Mbatha to league action after both missed the reverse fixture in Durban earlier this season.

Sibisi was suspended through a red card, while Mbatha had been absent from the starting lineup during that period.

The international break saw Pirates send six players to the Bafana Bafana squad with the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng, who won the Betway Premiership Player of the Month for March, Sibisi, and Mbatha among them.

Evidence Makgopa will be high on confidence after scoring in consecutive starts, with the striker sitting on 10 goals in all competitions this season.

Oswin Appollis and Patrick Maswanganyi remain key creative outlets, while Makhehlene Makhaula picked up a knock in the TS Galaxy match and will be monitored.

Ouaddou may opt for some rotation given the hectic schedule ahead, with a trip to Richards Bay following just three days later on April 10.

For Golden Arrows, Mngqithi will likely stick with the defensive shape that has served them reasonably well in recent weeks.

Ayabulela Maxwele is an important presence in midfield, while Nduduzo Sibiya offers pace and directness in the attacking third.

No major injury concerns have been reported for the visitors heading into this one.

The Managers

Abdeslam Ouaddou took over at Orlando Pirates in the summer after the departure of Jose Riveiro, who left for Egyptian giants Al Ahly before eventually moving on to Swedish club AIK.

The former Morocco international, who earned 68 caps and played in the Premier League with Fulham, was a bold appointment given his relatively thin managerial CV at the time.

He previously managed AS Vita in the DR Congo and had a brief spell at Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership.

It was a gamble that has paid off handsomely, with Pirates sitting second on the table and playing some of the most exciting football seen in Soweto in years.

Ouaddou has maintained the competitive culture instilled by Riveiro while adding a more aggressive, front foot approach that has made Pirates genuine title contenders for the first time in years.

In the opposite dugout, Manqoba Mngqithi needs little introduction to South African football.

The veteran coach spent years as an assistant to Pitso Mosimane and then Rulani Mokwena at Mamelodi Sundowns, accumulating a stack of winners medals as part of the most dominant coaching setup in the country.

He is also the only coach to win a major trophy at Golden Arrows, having guided them to MTN8 glory over a decade ago.

This time around at Arrows, he has been tasked with rebuilding around a younger core of players, and the results have been mixed but not without promise.

A top eight finish would represent a solid return given the resources at his disposal.

Tactical Preview

Ouaddou has favoured a 4-2-3-1 shape for much of the campaign, with the width coming from Mofokeng and Appollis out wide while Maswanganyi pulls the strings as the number 10.

Mbatha and Makhaula form a disciplined double pivot in midfield, providing the platform for the more attacking players ahead of them to roam freely.

Full backs Deano van Rooyen and Deon Hotto are encouraged to push high, and that is where much of Pirates’ width comes from in the final third.

The key to their dominance has been their press: they suffocate opponents in the first 20 minutes, and if they score early, the game tends to open up in their favour.

One interesting statistic: Pirates have scored first in the majority of their games this season and won almost every one of those matches, but they struggle badly when falling behind.

For Mngqithi, the game plan will almost certainly be built around containment and counter attack.

Arrows are likely to set up in a flat 4-4-2, sitting deep and inviting Pirates onto them before looking to spring quick transitions through the pace of Sibiya.

The danger for Arrows is that this approach requires intense concentration for the full 90 minutes, and one lapse against this Pirates side could be fatal.

If Mngqithi can find a way to keep the game tight and goalless into the second half, there might be a window for his side to nick something.

Realistically, however, Pirates’ quality in the wide areas and the movement of Makgopa in the box should prove too much for the Arrows back line.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Betting Tips
Orlando Pirates vs Golden Arrows

Best Bet
Orlando Pirates to Win & Over 1.5 Goals
Pirates have won nine of 11 home league games this season. They have scored two or more goals in eight of those nine victories. The combination of a home win and over 1.5 match goals has landed in the vast majority of their fixtures at Orlando Stadium, offering solid value at bigger odds than a straight home win.
Value Tip
Pirates to Win to Nil
The Buccaneers have the best defence in the league with only nine goals conceded in 22 games. At home, that record is even more stingy. Arrows have failed to score in four of their last five meetings with Pirates, and with Mngqithi likely to set up defensively, they may struggle to create the kind of chances needed to test Sipho Chaine. A home win to nil looks attractive.
Anytime Goalscorer
Evidence Makgopa
The big striker has scored in consecutive starts and sits on 10 goals in all competitions this season. He scored in the reverse fixture and tends to thrive against sides that sit deep, given his physicality and aerial ability in the box. He is worth backing to find the net again here.
Longshot
Correct Score: 3-0 Pirates
Pirates have won by three goals or more on multiple occasions this season, including 3-0 victories over Richards Bay, Marumo Gallants and Kaizer Chiefs, as well as the 3-1 win in the reverse fixture and the 6-0 rout of TS Galaxy. Against a side that will sit deep, a controlled 3-0 looks plausible at longer odds.

Final Score Prediction

Why 3-0?

Pirates have the league’s best home record, the best defence and the most potent attack. They have won their last five meetings with Arrows and kept clean sheets in four of those.

An early goal from the hosts would open the floodgates. Arrows do not have the firepower or the confidence to come to Soweto and take the game to Pirates, and Mngqithi will know that damage limitation is a realistic ambition here.

Expect the Buccaneers to control this from start to finish.
