Orlando Pirates walk away from deal to sign Ivorian star

The anticipated transfer of highly-rated Ivorian midfielder Ibrahim Bance to Orlando Pirates for the upcoming season has reportedly collapsed.

Bance’s one-year contract with Marumo Gallants is due to expire at the end of June, making him a free agent. He joined the Bloemfontein-based club last year.

It was widely understood that the 25-year-old was a key target for the Buccaneers before the conclusion of the previous season. However, the Soweto giants have apparently shifted their focus, opting instead to sign Mthetheleli Mthiyane from Stellenbosch FC.

Sources close to the situation indicate that Marumo Gallants are now attempting to retain Bance for the 2026/27 season, although the player may be considering other opportunities.

“There was interest from Pirates. There were talks behind the scenes. But Pirates has not come back again,” a source told KickOff. “Marumo want to keep him, but there are other options.”

The central midfielder played 17 matches for Gallants last season, having joined from Stade d’Abidjan in Ivory Coast. He has also played in Sweden and the United States.

Pirates are looking to strengthen their midfield with the expected departure of Sipho Mbule, whose contract will not be renewed, while the future of veteran Makhehlene Makhaula also up in the air.

The Buccaneers are reportedly on the verge of securing the signatures of Stellenbosch FC midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Richards Bay FC defender Sibangani Zulu as they look to complete their transfer business early.
