Pitso Mosimane in the frame as African giants begin search for World Cup coach

Published on by

Pitso Mosimane recently declared his interest in the Bafana Bafana job but could he find himself in consideration for a top national team job in Africa soon?

Mosimane has been without a job since January 2025 and recently expressed his desire to return to the helm of the South African national team if and when current coach Hugo Broos leaves.

Broos had said last year that he would quit and retire from coaching after the 2026 World Cup but he has been sending mixed signals recently which has cast doubts over whether he was serious about leaving.

That leaves those salivating for his position like Mosimane in an uncertain position but the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach could be one of those to be considered by Ghana who parted ways with Otto Addo on Monday.

Addo, who guided the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup before leaving, only to return for a second spell and help them qualify for this year’s tournament, was sent packing shortly after Ghana lost 2-1 to Germany, a few days after they were thrashed 5-1 by Austria last Friday.

The former Borussia Dortmund youth coach and scout had fallen out of favour with fans since failing to lead Ghana to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup qualification papered over the cracks until the latest defeat, a fourth straight since beating Comoros last October, proved to be the final straw.

It leaves the Ghana Football Association (GFA) searching for a coach, two-and-a-half-months before beginning their World Cup campaign and they will need an experienced coach who understands the African football landscape and can integrate foreign-based players for a quick turnaround in results.

Mosimane ticks most boxes and he would be willing to jump at such an opportunity, especially with a chance to guide a team at the World Cup and also lead them back to the AFCON given the next tournament is next year in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

It remains to be seen if the GFA will look to hire an African coach although it has tended to look at European tacticians who have previously worked on the continent.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 18 before facing England five days later and conclude group stage action against Croatia on June 28.
