PSL boss backs Benni McCarthy for Bafana job – ‘He’s doing magic in Kenya’

TS Galaxy chairman Tim Sukazi has publicly endorsed Benni McCarthy as the ideal candidate to succeed Hugo Broos as the head coach of Bafana Bafana.

Sukazi argues that McCarthy is the right man to lead the national team forward, suggesting that the current coach, Broos, has little more to offer.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has not yet made a decision regarding Broos’s future, whose contract concluded after the recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers, following which he had indicated he would retire.

“Benni McCarthy… is doing magic with an unfashionable side in Kenya,” Sukazi told the media during TS Galaxy’s squad unveiling in Pretoria as quoted by the Sowetan. “He has done a splendid job at all the teams he coached here when he was a novice in the coaching field.”

Highlighting McCarthy’s previous successes, Sukazi pointed to his impressive track record in South African football.

“At AmaZulu, he finished second, and he won the MTN8 with Cape Town City, and his teams have been high up there. That’s the truth, and these are the facts,” he stated.

“He’s young. So, if you ask me, I will go for Benni McCarthy, no doubt about it. I am saying that with the utmost respect to other candidates. I don’t know if Benni is a candidate, and I don’t know the other candidates. There has been mention of coach Pitso [Mosimane]. [But] if I were to go for personal choice, I would go for Benni.”

The TS Galaxy chairman also took aim at Broos for his past comments, particularly his criticism of Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s move to the United States. “When Mbokazi left for the US, he [Broos] said the [US] league is poor and he should have moved to better leagues. But now who was our best player at the World Cup playing in what league?” Sukazi questioned.

Sukazi further criticised Broos’s handling of young talent, citing his remarks about ex-Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng.

“Sometimes we must be truthful. [Broos] has already made statements about Rele that he is weak; he must be strong; he won’t play in six months, influencing the minds [of his Belgian club, Royale Union Saint-Gilloise],” he said.

“I think you know Rele was not in his plans to play from what I saw [during the World Cup]; the red card for Themba Zwane gave him the opportunity. He was third in line in that position. He was taken there to learn.”

While McCarthy is Sukazi’s preferred candidate, recent reports indicate he has not applied for the Bafana job with Pitso Mosimane and current AmaZulu boss Arthur Zwane reported to be among locals who have submitted their CVs.
