South Africa lost Bafana Bafana legend Lucas Moripe who was commonly referred to as Masterpieces a couple of days ago.
The former Pretoria Callies and Orlando Pirates player passed away at his home in Atteridgeville, Pretoria on Wednesday due to poor health.
Moripe, who died at the age of 71, started his career and went on to be dubbed among the greatest players South Africa have ever produced. He was forced to retire early in the 1980s owing to a knee injury.
The Premier Soccer League has now revealed the plans to honour Moripe ahead of Saturday's Carling Knockout final between Magesi FC and Mamelodi Sundowns at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
PSL reveals its plan in honour of the late Moripe
“The Premier Soccer League (PSL) is deeply saddened by the passing of South African football icon, Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe,” the league administrators said in a statement.
“Affectionately known as “Modimo wa Bolo”, Moripe is one of the finest South African football talents to ever grace the pitch. His illustrious career saw him play for prominent clubs such as Pretoria Bantu Callies Football Club and Orlando Pirates Football Club in the professional ranks. He also had a stint at Caroline Hills Football Club in Hong Kong.
“In recognition of his immense contribution to football in South Africa, the PSL has engaged the Premier of Gauteng Province for the legend to be accorded an official Provincial Funeral. A moment of silence will be observed in his honour in the Carling Knockout Final, as well all the Motsepe Foundation Championship, DStv Diski Challenge, and Betway Premiership fixtures over the next two weeks.”
Burial arrangements by the family and respective authorities are underway.
