Rele at 100: Unpacking Mofokeng’s century at Orlando Pirates

Published on by

Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng is already celebrating reaching 100 games for the club at the tender age of 20.

Mofokeng will turn 21 on October 23 but he has already hit a major milestone as he reached his century during Pirates’ 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday.

Rele, as he is popularly known, is yet to score this season but has been a revelation since bursting onto the scene as an 18-year-old in May 2023, during the 2022-23-24 season, leading the club to success.

In his first season, the winger managed just two games, getting 90 minutes on his debut against Royal AM before getting a goal in his second game as Pirates won 4-0 against AmaZulu.

Rele has gone from strength to strength

That was at the end of the 2022-23 season and the following season, Rele managed 38 games, scoring five goals and adding six assists, as Pirates won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, the latter in which he scored the winner in the final.

Mofokeng grew into stature in the 2024-25 season when his talents were on full display as he was Pirates’ best player, scoring 12 goals, adding 15 assists, the most by any player for the club.

Pirates won the MTN8, a game he played a vital part in, reached the Nedbank Cup final as well as the semi-final of the CAF Champions League while finishing second in the PSL and this term, he has made 10 appearances.

What is next for Mofokeng?

So far, Mofokeng has won four trophies at Pirates, three MTN8 and a Nedbank Cup, while he has scored 18 goals in total and added 22 assists.

Thanks to his great form, Rele has now become a full South African international as he is now one of the Bafana Bafana regulars, having managed eight caps so far.

He will be hoping to maintain the standard and earn a place in coach Hugo Broos’ squad for the 2025 Africa cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup, if Bafana Bafana make it through.
