The suggestion of Relebohile Mofokeng starting matches on the bench, put forward by an Orlando Pirates legend, is gaining traction following the tricky winger’s slow start to the season.
The 19-year-old’s form has been under scrutiny after failing to register a single goal or assist in his seven appearances so far.
Mofokeng, who recently returned from a minor injury, only played the final 15 minutes of the match against Chippa United at the Nelson Bay Stadium on Sunday, delivering a fair performance.
His struggles haven't gone unnoticed by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who has challenged him to find his best form before the team’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
With Mofokeng included in the national squad, his performance in these matches could determine whether the Pirates legend’s suggestion becomes a reality.

‘HIS PERFORMANCE HAS DIPPED’
“I have noticed that Rele’s performance has been declining. There is clearly something on his mind,” Lekoelea told KickOff.com
“When it comes to talent, he has it in abundance. He just needs to be mentally strong, and then we will see the old Rele again.
“The coach has been playing him in various positions because he is an all-roundi player. He is still young, and as a big club, we shouldn't place too much pressure or have unrealistic expectations for such a young player.
“I have also observed that his performance has dipped. He seems too casual during matches. These things happen – a player might be considering opportunities elsewhere. However, I trust him. He's a good player, and I believe he will bounce back.
“Most importantly, he still has a place in the Pirates line-up. He just needs to stay focused, that's all.”
