Revealed: The only player Mngqithi signed for Sundowns – ‘I don’t want to lie’

Immediate former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has revealed he only needed one player at the club in the summer transfer window.

Bongani Zungu, Brian Onyango, Gaston Sirino, Junior Mendieta, Ricardo Goss, Promise Mkhuma, Nyiko Mobbie, Sifiso Ngobeni, Ismail Watenga, Matias Esquivel, Abdelmounaim Boutouil, Thando Buthelezi, Etiosa Ighodaro, Thabiso Kutumela, Siyanda Msani, Luvuyo Phewa, Thabang Sibanyoni and Abubeker Nasir were deemed surplus to requirements.

The club strengthened by signing Kobamelo Kodisang, Arthur de Oliveira Sales, Kegan Johannes, Asekho Tiwani, and Iqraam Rayners.

Masandawana Sporting Director Flemming Berg and former coach Rulani Mokwena did not agree on who to sign which eventually led to the latter's exit.

Mngqithi resumed the coaching role until recently when he was fired after an inconsistent run across all competitions.

Who did Mngqithi sign?

The former Golden Arrows coach has now revealed he just requested for one player and his wish was granted.

“I don’t want to come out on this platform and say I didn’t know anything [about player recruitments]. I’d be lying; I don’t want to lie,” Mngqithi told MSW

“Yes, this initiative [of Flemming having a say on signing players] started before me. So when I got the opportunity, the only player that I personally requested from the club was Iqraam Rayners.

“That one is the player I personally requested, and pushed. Fortunately, I got support from a lot of people in the club; that’s why it happened, and I appreciate that.”

While Mngqithi is now looking for a new team, Miguel Cardoso starts his journey with Sundowns this weekend with a Caf Champions League game against Raja Casablanca.
