Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa has credited Ronwen Williams for motivating him to take a panenka, having pulled it off in their win over Marumo Gallants.
Sundowns beat Gallants 2-0 in the Carling Knockout semi-final on Sunday to seal their place in the final, where they will face Magesi FC at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, on November 23.
However, it was a tight game that was decided by moments of brilliance from Sundowns and one of them came from Costa in the second half.
The Brazilians were awarded a penalty and Costa stepped up to score in style after pulling off the famous panenka.
What did Williams tell Ribeiro Costa?
Neo Maema curled in a beautiful second goal deep in injury time to secure the win for Manqoba Mngqithi’s men who reached their eighth final in the competition.
“It was a difficult game,” Costa told SuperSport TV. “The opponent did very well, they were very compact and it was difficult to find space. But we are happy we made it to the final.
“When it comes to the penalty, I spoke to Ronza [Williams]at training and he said maybe you could try that in the game. So, I’m very happy.”
Costa has been instrumental to Sundowns this season as they compete on multiple fronts and will be expected to deliver once more in the final after the international break.
